<image:caption>A K Architecture’s respect for Philadelphia’s historical context fuels sensitive restoration and adaptive reuse projects, such as this conversion of a former architecture office, once a plasterers’ union hall, into a private residence. Maintaining the open floor plan to allow the diffused daylight to penetrate through the space from the south-facing entrance was balanced with creating a private living/sleeping area for the owners by adding a second story to the existing one-story building. “Much of my work focuses on responding to the specific context of a project’s site–in a way that respects the past, acknowledges the present, and gestures toward the future,” Lisa Armstrong, AIA, explains.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Lloyd Hall faces the Schuylkill River in Fairmount Park and is built on the site of the former historic Plaisted Hall at Number One Boathouse Row. It houses the most active recreation center in the City of Philadelphia-providing after school programs, and basketball and volleyball leagues for local youth, while also serving the greater Philadelphia region with a juggling club, folk dancing, and as the headquarters for Philadelphia City Rowing (PCR). A café, information office, and outdoor gathering spaces including plazas and terraces, rentable event spaces, and a roof deck have established Lloyd Hall as a popular meeting and gathering place. The building includes a large multipurpose room/gymnasium with accompanying locker rooms and restrooms, an upper lobby meeting space overlooking the river, and a staff/information office. In 2016, the Lloyd Hall Advisory Council commissioned A K Architecture to lead community stakeholders in a design charette process to rethink the vision for Lloyd Hall’s future with the goal of optimizing the public’s enjoyment of this well-used modern landmark.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Home - Design Plan</image:title>
<image:caption>The floor plan for the two buildings will be identical (except for their siting) since they are designed to be non-genderspecific. The design optimizes natural ventilation and daylight harvesting. Each new shower house will be 1350SF, (approximately twice the size of the existing houses), and each will have eleven toilet fixtures, twelve sinks, and eleven showers, plus two water fountains, a utility sink, a mop sink and hose bibs to accommodate 100 campers on each side of the camp. A changing area will be incorporated within each shower stall so campers can shower and change privately. The buildings will be composed of a slab-on-grade floor, concrete continuous footings, masonry block walls up to 8’-0” above finished floor, galvanized steel columns, wood post and beam roof framing with metal roofing.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - Lisa Armstrong, Principal, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP BD+C</image:title>
<image:caption>Lisa is an architect with more than twenty-five years of project design and management experience. Lisa founded A K Architecture, previously known as Armstrong Kaulbach Architects, in 1991. Lisa approaches each project with a multi-disciplinary perspective, seeking design solutions that balance project goals - maximize energy efficiency, satisfy long term sustainability objectives, and find the right fit between design priorities, schedule, and budget constraints. Lisa has designed environmentally sustainable public facilities, multi-use community centers, childhood education centers, and affordable housing developments; many of which have won design awards such as Lloyd Hall - Number One Boathouse Row, Calcutta House III AIDS Hospice, and Columbus Square Recreation Center. Lisa specializes in working with complicated stakeholder structures, unusual siting constraints, and historic and/or complex contexts. Much of Lisa’s work focuses on adaptive reuse of historic structures. Facilitating community engagement through charrettes is an integral part of the creative process Lisa leads at AKA. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Oxford University, Lisa has served on many boards including the Philadelphia AIA Chapter, Community Design Collaborative, the Preservation Alliance, PennDesign Alumni Association, and Greening Greenfield.</image:caption>

This once empty space is now full of active children and parents coming to learn. The design of Woolston Child and Family Center is featured in the book, EXPANDING ARCHITECTURE, edited by Bryan Bell and Katie Wakeford, as an example of how to adapt an underutilized place of worship to be a vibrant community hub–engaging residents of all ages.</image:caption>

<image:title>Woolston - The first phase of construction was the renovation ofthe ground floor of the East Baptist Church to accommodate four accessible child care classrooms, a full-service kitchen for serving hot meals to the children, and office space.</image:title>
<image:caption>The second phase of construction maintains the open character of the large second floor volume of space with its cathedral ceiling while still providing functional office space for 22 staff and classroom space for 54 children. Sub-spaces layered within the large open space include: a computer lab, an art classroom, a kitchenette, a resource room, a younger school-age classroom which is also used as a parent/child playgroup space, and a room used both as a classroom for school-age children and as space for adult workshops</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Woolston Child and Family Center (North Philadelphia, PA) is a transformation of a vacant church into a vibrant child care and family education center.

<image:title>Woolston Family Center - The first phase of construction was the renovation ofthe ground floor of the East Baptist Church to accommodate four accessible child care classrooms, a full-service kitchen for serving hot meals to the children, and office space.</image:title>

<image:title>University City Swim Club - University City Swim Club</image:title>
<image:caption>Located in West Philadelphia, the University City Swim Club is anon-profit club with a proud history of diversity. It was the first integrated pool in the United States. The Club celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014. The interiors and one corner of each of the buildings were fully removed and replaced including the slabs-on-grade and utilities. Sight lines and visual access are controlled through careful placement of new walls and openings so that the spaces feel open but comfortably secure. Custom detailing and fabrication of sink counters, showers, and locker areas celebrate the idea of playing with water as a way to build community. These pavilion buildings at the historic University City Swim Club provide spacious changing areas which blur the edge between inside and outside while maintaining privacy. A K Architecture’s design of the renovation of the facilities doubles the locker and shower capacity for the growing membership of over 1,500 individuals, while updating the buildings and amenities to be fully accessible.</image:caption>

<image:title>Cape Cod House - Originally a Cape Cod Methodist Meeting House that was moved piece by piece from a nearby hilltop, and rebuilt as a painter’s studio and gallery on a perch overlooking the tidal Pamet River, this unusual adaptive reuse to a family home began with an intensive analysis of the site and building.</image:title>
<image:caption>Views of the river and sun orientation were the primary factors guiding the decisions of how to respectfully and incrementally alter the exterior and interior order by introducing new windows and openings. A portion of the existing dividing wall between the large living/dining room and the new eat-in kitchen was carefully removed, providing transparency and connection through the house to the afternoon light and sunset. The existing enclosed stairs to the second floor were removed and reconfigured to create an open vertical communication between levels, bringing daylight from the upper windows down to the first floor, transforming the quality of space with changing light throughout the day. Existing wood trim, cladding and millwork was salvaged and reused throughout – including the existing stair treads and risers with their beautiful patina of age and wear.</image:caption>
